My name is Joseph Spellman, and I am a junior Classics and Economics major at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. I am a native of Tyler, TX, and no, I’m still not used to the Minnesota winters. I started taking Latin in my freshman year of college, and I fell in love with the classics as well as the community that studies them.

Outside of the classroom I love making music with friends as principal bassoonist of the Norseman band, co-principal of the St. Olaf Philharmonia, and a member of the St. Olaf Handbell choir. I am also the lead mental health peer educator on campus, and the tutor for our Latin labs.
When I have a spare moment I like watching truly obscene amounts of Netflix, paying League of Legends very badly, and serenading my friends with (off-key) renditions of showtunes.

I am thrilled to serve you all as the Megas Chrysophylax for Eta Sigma Phi this year. Please send an email to if there’s anything I can do for you!
